From Railroad Town to Expressway City

Asphalt paving in Donna covers a mix of century-old neighborhoods, newer homes and rural lots on the edges of town. Donna was founded in July 1904 when the railroad reached the site and incorporated on April 13, 1911. It is named for Donna Fletcher, the postmistress when the post office opened in 1908. Today I-2/US 83 runs along the north side of the city, 11 miles from McAllen and 23 from Harlingen.

Older neighborhoods

Homes near the original townsite often have driveways that have been patched many times. When patches cover much of the surface, the base has usually given out. We remove the old material, rebuild the base and pave fresh, with the edges supported so they do not crumble again.

Caliche and gravel on the edges of town

Rural properties around Donna frequently have caliche drives. Converting them to asphalt cuts down on mud and dust. Where the caliche is firm, it can be reworked as base; where it has rutted or turned soft, it comes out.

Businesses near the expressway

Shops, restaurants and service businesses along I-2 need lots that drain and stay striped. We overlay, patch and restripe in phases.

Flat ground and drainage

Donna sits at about 92 feet of elevation on flat land, and parts of Hidalgo County have clay-rich soils that drain slowly. We build slope into every driveway and lot.

Permits

Apron work on city streets is handled by the City of Donna; frontage on the state highway is a TxDOT matter. We check before scheduling. Call (956) 303-6419 or get a free estimate.

Donna Questions

Can my caliche driveway in Donna be paved?

Usually. Firm caliche can be reworked as base; soft or rutted sections are dug out and replaced before paving.

My driveway has been patched several times. Should I keep patching?

If patches cover a large share of it, replacement usually costs less over time than continued patching.

Do you pave business lots on the I-2 frontage?

Yes, including overlays, patching and striping. Access changes onto the state highway are a TxDOT matter, which we check first.

How long will a new driveway last in Donna?

Cost guides put asphalt driveways at 15 to 30 years with proper base and regular sealing.
