Asphalt Built for Rio Grande Valley Heat
Asphalt paving in Edinburg is a heat problem more than a cold one. Freezes are short and rare here: the average first frost does not come until December 11 and the last one is around January 25. Summer is the hard part. Average daily highs run 94.7 degrees in June, 96.7 in July and 97.5 in August, and the city hit a record 108 degrees in both June 2023 and May 2024. A new asphalt driveway or parking lot in Edinburg has to stay firm when the surface is hot enough to soften, shed the heavy September rain, and hold its color and binder through years of hard sun. Done right, with a solid base, the right thickness and regular sealing, it does all three.
Start with the ground underneath
Hidalgo County soils vary block to block, and they matter. USDA soil descriptions for the county include the Hidalgo series, a well-drained sandy clay loam with lime deposits a foot or two down, and the Raymondville series, a clay loam over clay that drains slowly and, when it dries out, opens cracks up to 2 inches wide and 30 to 40 inches deep. Ground that shrinks in the dry months and swells when the rain comes back moves the pavement on top of it. Asphalt laid straight on that soil, or on a few inches of loose material, cracks along the edges and settles in the wheel paths.
HomeGuide describes a typical residential asphalt driveway as 2 to 3 inches of compacted asphalt over 6 to 8 inches of compacted gravel base, with 3 to 4 inches of asphalt and 8 to 10 inches of base where trucks, trailers or RVs park, and 4 inches or more for commercial lots. We check the subgrade on every job. Soft spots get dug out, the base goes down in compacted layers, and it is graded so water runs off the pavement instead of soaking in at the edges. Asphalt contractors who skip that dig-out can quote less, but the savings tend to come back as broken edges and wheel-path ruts.
Caliche, gravel and tar-and-chip driveways
Plenty of Valley driveways started out as caliche or gravel. Caliche is a lime-cemented soil that is widely used as road base where it is cheap and close at hand, but it does not hold up well to moisture. When a caliche drive is turning to mud after storms and dust in summer, asphalt over a properly compacted base is the usual next step. We look at what is there, decide what can stay as base and what has to come out, and price the conversion as its own line on the quote.
Sun, heat and timing
Ultraviolet light and heat oxidize the asphalt binder, which is why an untreated driveway turns gray and starts to ravel. Sealcoating slows that down. Heat also affects new pavement: HomeGuide notes that in hot weather you should wait 3 to 5 days before parking on fresh asphalt rather than the usual 24 to 48 hours. In summer we start early, roll the mat while it is at working temperature, and give you clear instructions about when to drive on it, where not to turn the wheels, and when to keep trailer jacks and kickstands off it.
Drainage and the September rains
Edinburg averages about 24 inches of rain a year, and September is the wettest month at more than 4 inches. A lot of it comes in heavy bursts. Flat land is the rule across Hidalgo County, so slope has to be built into the pavement. We set a cross slope that moves water toward the street, a swale or a drain, and we point out low spots and downspouts that will dump water onto the asphalt before we pave.
Edinburg permits and the driveway apron
The strip between the street and your property line is public right-of-way. The City of Edinburg Engineering Department requires a Right-of-Way Permit for work there, including sidewalks, curb and gutter, street cuts and driveway aprons, and it uses a Non-Standard Agreement for driveway or sidewalk work that does not meet city standards. If your lot fronts a state highway such as US 281 (I-69C) or SH 107, a new or changed driveway onto that highway goes through TxDOT's driveway permit (Form 1058) instead. If your new asphalt stops at an existing concrete apron, none of this may apply. If you want the apron widened or moved, we sort that out before the work is scheduled.
What a typical asphalt driveway job includes
- Measuring the area and checking slope, drainage and the apron
- Removing old asphalt, caliche or concrete and hauling it off
- Digging out soft subgrade and replacing it with compacted base
- Grading and compacting the base in lifts
- Placing and rolling hot-mix asphalt to the thickness on your quote
- Finishing edges and tying into the garage slab and apron
- Telling you when to drive on it and when to schedule the first sealcoat
Why Homeowners Call Asphalt Paving Edinburg
Base before blacktop
Soft subgrade is dug out and replaced, and the base is compacted in layers before any asphalt goes down.
Numbers in writing
Your quote states base depth and compacted asphalt thickness for each area, so you can compare bids line by line.
Scheduled for Valley weather
Early starts in summer and no sealing with rain in the forecast, so the mix compacts and the sealer cures.
Permits flagged up front
We tell you at the estimate whether the job reaches the city right-of-way or a TxDOT highway, and what that involves.

Where We Work
Edinburg is home base. We also work in McAllen, Pharr, San Juan, Alamo, Mission, Palmview, Alton, Weslaco, Donna, Mercedes, Elsa, Edcouch, Hidalgo, La Joya, Sullivan City, Peñitas, Progreso and the rural communities north of town along US 281 and the FM roads. The towns along I-2 and US 83 are built up and mostly paved, while places like Linn and Hargill have long caliche and gravel drives. Each city runs its own permits for work in its right-of-way, so outside Edinburg we check with that city, the county or TxDOT before any work that touches the street. Each town page below covers the local details. When you gather bids from asphalt companies around Hidalgo County, ask each one how deep the base will go on clay like the Raymondville series. That single number explains most of the gap between quotes.

Common Questions
How much does a 2,000 sq ft asphalt driveway cost in Edinburg?
HomeGuide lists new asphalt driveways at about $5 to $12 or more per square foot installed, which works out to roughly $10,000 to $24,000 for 2,000 square feet. Angi's range is $7 to $15 per square foot. Removing old pavement or caliche, extra base over soft clay, and apron work add to that. Your written estimate is the price.
How thick should an asphalt driveway be?
For cars, a common build is 2 to 3 inches of compacted asphalt over 6 to 8 inches of compacted gravel base. If you park a work truck, trailer or RV, plan on 3 to 4 inches of asphalt and 8 to 10 inches of base. On clay-heavy Valley soils, base depth matters as much as the asphalt.
Is summer a bad time to pave in Edinburg?
Hot weather is fine for laying asphalt, but fresh pavement stays soft longer. HomeGuide recommends waiting 3 to 5 days before parking on new asphalt in hot weather instead of the usual 1 to 2 days. We start early on summer jobs and tell you exactly when the driveway is ready for traffic.
What should I ask paving contractors in Edinburg before I sign?
For each area, get the rock base and the finished asphalt depth written down. Ask whether an old caliche drive will be dug out or reworked as base, and how they will slope the pavement on flat Valley ground. If the apron is changing, ask who handles the Right-of-Way Permit with the city. For summer work, ask what time they start and how long you should stay off the new surface. A paving company that answers all of that plainly is giving you something you can hold it to.
Can you pave over my caliche or gravel driveway?
Often the existing material can be reworked as part of the base, but only after it is checked. Caliche loses strength when wet, so muddy or rutted sections are dug out and replaced with compacted base before asphalt goes down. We show you what we find before pricing it.
Do I need a permit for a driveway in Edinburg?
Work in the city's right-of-way, including driveway aprons, curbs and sidewalks, needs a Right-of-Way Permit from the City of Edinburg Engineering Department. A driveway connecting to a state highway goes through TxDOT. Paving that stays on your side of the property line generally does not reach either, and we confirm which applies at the estimate.
How long does asphalt last in the Valley?
Cost guides put asphalt driveway life at 15 to 30 years. In a hot, sunny climate the surface oxidizes faster, so sealing every few years and filling cracks before the rainy season make a real difference in where your driveway lands in that range.
What does an asphalt paver do?
An asphalt paver is the machine that lays hot-mix asphalt in an even layer at a set width and thickness; rollers follow right behind to compact it while it is still hot. On a driveway or parking lot, the quality of the base and the compaction behind the paver decide how well the pavement holds up.
