An Old River Town With New Growth
Asphalt paving in Hidalgo works across some of the oldest settled ground in the Valley. Spanish colonists under José de Escandón settled the area around 1749, and in 1852 John Young renamed the town Edinburgh after his birthplace in Scotland; it took the name Hidalgo in 1885. The city is growing again, from 11,198 residents in 2010 to 13,964 in 2020, and homeowner vacancy is low, with only 5.7 percent of housing units vacant.
Older homes near the river
Driveways in older parts of town often sit on ground that has been built on and dug up many times. We probe for soft areas and old fill, then rebuild the base where needed before paving.
Newer homes
In newer subdivisions, the job is usually protecting what is there. Crack filling before the wet season and sealcoating every few years keep sun and water from breaking down the surface.
Commercial traffic
As a border city, Hidalgo has businesses that see trucks and steady customer traffic. Lots are built with thicker sections where trucks turn and load, and restriped with accessible spaces when they are resealed.
A local landmark
Hidalgo calls itself the Killer Bee Capital of the World, after the first U.S. colony of Africanized bees was documented nearby in 1990, and a 2,000-pound monument stands next to city hall.
Sealing in border heat
Hidalgo's sun is as strong as anywhere in the county. Sealcoat applied in the cooler morning hours cures better, and we avoid days when afternoon storms are forecast.
