A New Driveway, From the Subgrade Up
Asphalt driveway paving means building a new driveway, or tearing out a worn one and starting over, with hot-mix asphalt rolled over a compacted base. It is the right call when a driveway is broken up across most of its surface, when a caliche or gravel drive keeps rutting and washing out, or when a new home or addition needs a driveway for the first time. If your driveway has wide alligator cracking, sunken wheel paths, or edges crumbling into the grass, the base has usually failed, and patching the top will not hold.
Why the base decides everything
In Hidalgo County, the ground under a driveway can be anything from well-drained sandy clay loam to clay that cracks open in a dry spell and swells again when the rain returns. A driveway built on the second kind without a proper base moves every season. The fix is simple but it takes work: dig out soft or organic material, place crushed base in layers, and compact each layer before the next one goes on. HomeGuide describes a typical residential build as 6 to 8 inches of compacted gravel base under 2 to 3 inches of compacted asphalt, with 8 to 10 inches of base and 3 to 4 inches of asphalt where heavy trucks, trailers or RVs park.
Getting the water off
Edinburg is flat, so a driveway does not drain itself. We set the finished grade so water moves toward the street or a swale, keep the surface below the garage slab where possible, and look at downspouts that empty onto the drive. Water that sits at the edge of asphalt gets under it, and in clay soil that is how edges sink and break.
Paving in the heat
Hot-mix asphalt has to be compacted while it is still hot enough to work, and in a Valley summer the bigger concern is the opposite: the new surface stays soft for days. HomeGuide suggests waiting 3 to 5 days before parking on new asphalt in hot weather. We start summer jobs early in the day and leave you clear instructions for the first weeks: no turning the steering wheel while parked, no trailer jacks or kickstands, and vary where you park.
Caliche and gravel conversions
Many older and rural properties around Edinburg have caliche or gravel drives. Converting one to asphalt can be economical when the existing material is firm, because some of it can be reworked as base. Areas that have turned to mud or rutted deeply are dug out and replaced. We show you which sections can stay and price the conversion line by line.
The apron and the permit question
Inside Edinburg city limits, the driveway apron in the public right-of-way falls under the city's Right-of-Way Permit. On a state highway frontage, TxDOT handles driveway access with its own permit. Most residential jobs tie into an existing concrete apron and never touch either. If yours involves widening or moving the apron, we raise it at the estimate.
After it is paved
New asphalt needs time to cure before it is sealed; HomeGuide recommends waiting 3 to 6 months. With sealing every few years and cracks filled as they appear, cost guides put an asphalt driveway's life at 15 to 30 years.

Asphalt Driveway Paving Questions
How long does it take to pave a driveway?
Most residential driveways are paved in one day once the base is ready. Tear-out and base work can add a day or two. In hot weather, plan on 3 to 5 days before parking on it.
Asphalt or concrete for a driveway in Edinburg?
Asphalt usually costs less up front and is easier to patch; concrete costs more and lasts longer with little upkeep. Angi lists concrete at $8 to $18 per square foot versus $7 to $15 for asphalt. Asphalt needs sealing every few years in strong sun.
Will tree roots crack my new driveway?
They can. Roots from large shade trees lift asphalt over time. Where roots are close, we discuss cutting them back, adding base depth, or keeping the paved edge farther from the trunk.
Can I widen my driveway at the same time?
Yes. Widening on your property is part of the job. Widening the apron at the street is right-of-way work and may need a City of Edinburg permit, so we check that first.
